Thirty-two years ago today, U.S. Army commandos from the 160th Special Operations Air Regiment—the famed Nightstalkers—quietly deployed to Chad in Central Africa and, in the dead of night, snatched up a Soviet-made Libyan Mi-25 helicopter so American analysts could study it.

The daring, long-range mission for many years was a secret to almost anyone who wasn’t directly involved. U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command in North Carolina celebrated the mission, code-name Operation Mount Hope III, with official artwork on Thursday.
