The tragic drowning of nine US service members who died when their amphibious vehicle sank off the coast of California is being blamed on their commanders being 'burnt out' from the pandemic, a new report has revealed. 

Eight Marines and one sailor, aged between 18 and 23, died in the accident on July 30, 2020 when their armored ship-to-shore transport craft took on water off the coast of San Clemente Island while returning to the USS Somerset. 

Marine Corps investigators found in March that the deaths were 'preventable,' and said that complacency, poor maintenance and inspections, and inadequate training all contributed to the tragedy.
